“Help me to be LESS PLEASED with my spiritual experiences, and when I feel at ease after sweet communings, teach me it is far too little I know and do.”
—Valley of Vision, Longings After God (pp. 230-231)
I came across this reading in the Valley of Vision tonight. How contrary to my thinking but how right and true this is.
I often think I should be more contented with my spiritual experiences but the old Puritan says nay. He is right, for when I am contented with my spiritual experiences, I am not longing for more. When have I ever had “enough” of the sweet Spirit of Christ? NEVER!
What is it then? I shall be content with my desiring. More LORD, give me ever more of the experiential presence of Christ. I will only be content with more of Him.
