Prophesy ye not, say they to them that prophesy: they shall not prophesy to them, that they shall not take shame.
—Micah 2:6
Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever: that this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the Lord: which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits…
—Isaiah 30:8-10
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
—2 Timothy 4:3-4
We are either entering the house of Wisdom by submitting ourselves to the authority of the word of God or yielding to the flesh by seeking to confirm of our own desires by the word of man. A most nefarious self-deception is seeking the later under the guise of the former.
Do not be deceived. If you follow after the desires of the flesh and human wisdom, propping up for yourself a preacher who will tell you what your itching ears want to hear instead the unadulterated word of God is the worse form of idolatry one can commit. Those who do so lie to themselves, men, and God.
Multitudes sit under “preaching” today that can not rightly be called preaching.
They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.
—Jeremiah 6:14
