MANY will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Matthew 7:22 & 23
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat
The term “virtue signaling” today denotes the practice of publicly affirming the present socio-political orthodoxy while inwardly and practically having no real commitment to it. It is emotion without substance. A desire for worldly absolution.
There is also such a thing as virtue signaling Jesus and He hates it. According to the words of Jesus, “MANY” who profess Him are mere gospel virtue signalers. It is part of the broad way that leads to destruction. It is to acknowledge Jesus outwardly while loving the world and the things of the world inwardly.
Such virtue signalers are not Christians.
In this post I’d like to address the sort of gospel virtue signalers who appear to begin well but end in Hell. Those who, in their own experience, seemed to burn hot for Christ but end up destitute of spiritual life. What is the chief cause of such false converts?
Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
In Matthew 24:12 we are told that the love of many shall wax cold because iniquity shall abound. In the previous verses the iniquity is identified and it is multifaceted. It is the result of 1) persecution (verse 9), 2) lack of love among the saints accompanied by hate and deception (verse 10), and 3) false teachers (verse 11). Such things have led many to abandon the Biblical gospel. Many will virtue signal Jesus, but have very little desire for the trials that come with truly loving Him. They will not “take up the cross.”
What’s worse, these trials are not limited to persecution coming from those outside of the church, but 2 of the 3 causes mentioned in our text are found within the church itself!
What are we to do that we not find ourselves among the “MANY” false professors? Jesus answers in verse 13…
But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
We are therefore in need of much grace. It is not within our power to endure such things but if our love for Christ is according to the Spirit of God, He will keep it.
Let us not be presumptuous. Christ warns us because we that love Him in truth need to hear this warning. It is part of the means the Holy Spirit is using even now to keep us.
Let us seriously put the question to ourselves. Are you merely virtue signaling Jesus or are you willing to die for Him?…and if die, will you also live for Him?
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
